"OneGeology is an international initiative of the geological surveys of the world and a flagship project of the 'International Year of Planet Earth'. Its aim is to create dynamic geological map data of the world available via the web. The mission is 'Make web-accessible the best available geological map data worldwide at a scale of about 1:1 million." The target scale is 1:1 million but the project will be pragmatic and accept a range of scales and the best available data. Geological map data will be made available as a distributed web service, using the OGC 'web feature mapping' approach. The priority of OneGeology is to make available interoperable, Internet-accessible, scientifically-attributed data." See the OneGeology Portal.

Participating geological surveys contribute maps by means of web map servers (WMS). The OneGeology current status page shows geology maps available now. Countries in green have geology map data online in WMS servers for OneGeology participation. Please review the Guidance for the use of OneGeology images and data

The active WMS servers, and information about the geology maps on the servers, are listed in the OneGeology Catalog of Registered Services.

The IDV shows geology maps contributed to OneGeology, on various map projections, and the IDV can combine the OneGeology maps with other geoscience data displays. Details about some of the geology maps available are shown below.

OneGeology Maps in the IDV

In the IDV, enter a WMS URL server address, such as one listed below, in the Dashboard window, Data Chooser panel, Catalogs section (not URLs), in the Catalogs: entry box, Click on which map you want from that server in the "Merge Layers" box. Click "Add Source." The map will be displayed automatically. You should set your IDV projection to the correct geographic region. If you get an error box with a message about "BBOX" being wrong, try a different projection. If you "Add source and no map is made and you made this map before, go to the Dashboard Fields panel and remove that data source. Adding it twice will no make the map again, even if you have deleted it from the first time.

In the IDV's right side Legend area, click on the little image of the map legend to see the legend in a new larger window. WMS map images first are loaded in the bottom of the IDV wireframe box; move the IDV political map boundaries to the same level as the geology map.
